David Allan Evans was born and raised in Souix City, Iowa. Evans taught literature and writing courses at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. He was appointed poet laureate of South Dakota in 2002. His most recent full-length collection is The Bull Rider's Advice: New and Selected Poems (The Center for Western Studies, 2004).
